Last night, our documentary "When the Swallows Fall Silent" was screened at Ananke 1916 in the heart of Nicosia, bringing together residents, artists, educators, journalists, cultural professionals and citizens for an evening of cinema and meaningful conversation.
The screening was followed by a thoughtful discussion on memory, identity, cultural heritage, urban transformation and the future of European neighbourhoods. What began as a documentary screening soon evolved into a broader exchange of ideas about the challenges facing contemporary cities: social cohesion, migration, gentrification, community life and the importance of preserving the human dimension of heritage.
It was also a pleasant surprise for us to discover that Paul Dujarding, Commissioner-General for Heritage in the Brussels Capital Region, President of Europa Nostra Belgium and Council Member of Europa Nostra, was among the audience! His presence and thoughtful contribution to the discussion added a valuable European perspective to an evening that felt both local and universal, connecting many of the themes explored in the film with the wider European conversation on cultural heritage, democracy and citizen participation.
Meaningful change is often born in the most unexpected places. Sometimes it begins or, in our case, finds new strength, through a film, a conversation and a group of citizens from different backgrounds gathered in a small yard on a summer night in Nicosia.
The evening reminded us that heritage is not only about monuments and historic buildings. It is also about people, memories, stories and the everyday spaces where communities continue to meet, exchange ideas and imagine their future together.
A heartfelt thank you to Annie Sofokleous for making this special screening possible and to everyone who joined us and contributed to such an inspiring dialogue.
On behalf of our director, ΅constantinos patsalides and myself, we would like to extend our sincere thanks to everyone who joined us for the screening and discussion. Your presence, thoughts and contributions made the evening truly meaningful.
We would also like to express our appreciation to Sir Paul J.R. Dujardin for sharing his reflections and for highlighting the importance of local stories and citizen-led conversations in shaping the future of cultural heritage.
It was an honour.
